Run

"Hit the Ground " is a song from Lizz Wright, " Dreaming Wide Awake,"  I listen to while working in my studio, over and over and over and over. Why? There is no rhythm in my life. There is nothing to mark the days that go by. I open my eyes and 20 years have gone by. I blink and it is another season.

She sings, "See your eyes in mine," Hit the ground and run. . . " etc.

I miss my old blog. This one is different. I can not figure out what it is that makes this so. . .

This song adds a beat to my days. This song beats better than my heart.

My heart is on a pilgrimage. . .

tucked into a secret pocket. . .

of one who IS on a pilgrimage. . .

He just does not know that
I am along.

Spain

A dream of a place

a dream of pace

he and she are pacemakers.

I am a piece maker

and a peacemaker.

Memory

This week I dream of my Dad for the first time. His birthday would be on May 25th. I found this packet of treasures he gave me for Christmas one year. You know how some say there are no co-incidents? It makes one wonder. . .skewed are the memories of memories. He has been gone for 18 years. He is spread upon a mountain top too high for me to visit in person but my mind goes there, often.
He always printed. Never did I see it any other way, His writing was short and sweet. His cartoons were the best ever, for me.

Zero Onto Detail

OK, so here I am in the studio working on this little basket pendant while thinking about my friend Charlotte Richardson. She and I were good friends when I lived and worked in my studio in Downtown Dallas. She had a way of saying just the right things in just the right way when it came to just about everything. She brought with her one day this amazing handmade book with a closure made from a mysterious object. It was one of those things they used to put onto power boxes on houses to lock them (in a way). It was made of a lead looking metal. Somehow, she attached it to the front of the book where you could wrap a cord around it to close. This book was of her own handmade paper and board which was colored with watercolor. Just gorgeous. Inside, you would see perfectly crafted accordion fold white pages. I always thought her IQ was up over the edge.
I miss her dearly. She passed away a few years ago from ovarian cancer.
So anyway, I have been thinking of a way to attach knitted cord onto the basket necklace to form an interesting closure and what pops into my mind? Acorn holder? So this is what is on my table, today.

Papers & Books

I must tell you, again, how much I love to hold and read real books
wherein I find worlds upon worlds.  Once upon a time, I listened to an audio book while driving through Yosemite Park. I visually remember the book by the road I took.
The Art of Memory really works for me. I attach places to words and words to places.
I remember a song I like because of this visual idea. . .
I ride a pony upon my boat. And Roy Rodgers and an old Dale. . .
Lyle Lovette wrote this sometime ago and when it comes up on the radio in the car
I remember the place I was in when the precursor of the Loma Prieta Earthquake happened about a week later. I was sitting at my desk working on my computer with my daughter sitting next to me.
So, visual images are linking points to sound and places, for me.

I laughed when I pulled up this photo I took this morning to see one tiny yellow fiber in the upper right hand corner of the below photograph. I am challenging myself to do something interesting (to me) every single day. IreadIwriteIworkwithfiberIdrawIpaintIgardenIcookItravel. . .

Bubbles and Stormy Weather

This day is most welcome, time to fold paper and laundry, origami, and relishing thoughts of the article in Selvedge "Back to her roots, Teresa Martins' Organic Designs,"  I like it because it reminds me of when a friend asked? ? ? who is my favorite designer. My answer would be Martin if she asked me today. I especially like her accessories. Anyone who is into fiber would love, love, love.. . .

I think she does a great job of using folding techniques.

I love how she layers upon layers. It is like Photoshop for fibers.

But, these you can wear.

I am thinking about bubbles today, as well. The reflection of life. A bit distorted. If you blink you might miss it. If you think too much. . .It pops.

I think it would be great to have a tube into an endless bottle of bubbles then just blow and blow and blow

PS I saw some skirts like hers in Floyd, Va. I see this old house on my way and photo it over and over and

A Few of My Favorite Things

  • Selvedge Magazine, the online edition, because I live in the United States, and 75 miles to the nearest bookstore, is at the top of my list. I have visited London and my heart loves London. This magazine is intelligent and varied in representing unique choices related to Fiber Arts. I especially love articles related to the history of textiles and examples of ideas and images I might never have seen, otherwise. The international flair of the ads are of interest to my hungry mind, as well.

  • Habu Textiles. the website is visited by me, often. The choices they make of what to carry in the store might be exactly what I am seeking, or what, if I were an octopus, I would want to make to use, myself.

  • The woodlands where I live, because of the secret little flowers and the habitats I find.

  • Walking the path at Cascade Park in Virginia where the boulders are covered in moss or flushes of pure water. The fallen trees make natural bridges where I can sit to watch and photograph. The joy I feel that my lungs work well enough to be able to do this, again.

  • Anthropologie, the people behind the concepts never cease to amaze me. I would work there because I would fit right in.

Reading books about the period around the turn of the last century, until about 1940. I love the art spirit. I have a great appreciation of what happened to the world with the influenza catastrophe, the horrors of world war 1, the art that was done in spite of everything, and the way humans survive great depressions, and what and how they did just that.

  1. I love the movie, "Chicago," the dance and songs were done so perfectly.

  1. The Sundance Catalogue.

  1. I think I would like the candle called "absinthe" at one of my favorite shops," Bellochio" in San Fran.

  1. Tail of the Yak in Berkeley, Cali.

  1. My Kindle Fire HD! I love the book, "The Glass Bead Game", I re-read this every now and then.

  1. Mish Mish in Blacksburg, they have what I need.
How the numbering system on this page is not working, after the fact of writing my thoughts (my fault). Makes me laugh.

I am listening to Mrs. Dalloway from Audible Books. Annette Bening is absolutely perfect for the voice. I love this particular book, anyways.  Virginia Woolf and Gertrude Stein are big influences for someone like me.

And Google! Even if they watch everything. Like they always say. . .

Just GOOGLE It!

Have a great weekend!

Stitch by Little Stitch

A bird is throwing out old straw and bits.

Waiting for the dawn to come

he had her worm
now it is time for the worm to turn
to hide the old forgotten
nest
the worm
not eaten
is
now hers.

The tide is turning
stitch by stitch.

To you

have a great day!

Back Into Swing of Things

If it works, don't break it, if you have to start somewhere, just begin, again. I find, for me, at least, that  just taking or making time to work, making a decision to do just that, then just do it, works.

Sharing the process, this works for me.
Even if it is not very good, who cares?
When I do this, I get caught up, wings of desire,(Rilke) will carry me exactly where I want to be.
Patience, now that is something I ponder. Sooner, than I can know, it really does not matter, when. . .if I live in this moment. . .

I hope for you that you enjoy the moments of your life, too.
